While most itineraries for first-time visitors to Greece include the island of Mykonos, the neighboring island of Naxos offers a quieter vibe and a unique farm-to-table culinary experience. We found the fresh flavors, unique villages and stunning landscapes of Naxos to be robust and placidly refreshing.

First up on our trip: a visit to a family dairy farm -- where we tasted classic Greek cooking and got hands-on experience make Naxos’ trademark Arseniko cheese. We followed the process from start-to-finish: stirring the proprietary blend of cow & goat milk over an open flame (using a gnarled olive branch), pressing the curds into cheese forms, salting the wheels for curing, and visiting the temperature-controlled room where the cheese rounds are aged to perfection. Of course, we got to taste finished Arseniko cheeses, along with other farm-fresh produce and treats.

Next, we were treated to a private tour of a family-run vineyard, led by a certified oenologist. We learned how the vineyard was pivoting from classic agriculture techniques to new, water-saving measures that take full advantage of the inland Aegean climate. The result -- superior grapes with minimal irrigation. The proof was in the divine, limited-edition local wines we savored both at the vineyard and at a Wine Bar in Naxos Chora (Town).

To really experience Naxos, though, you need to venture inland to the Naxian highland towns. We wandered through charming villages like Halki, home to the famed Kitron distillery, visited a historic olive press, and navigated the steep winding streets of Aprianthos.
